What Does Acid Free or Archival Quality Mean?

What is Acid Free? When a mill makes a paper that is "Acid Free" it simply means that the paper mixture has a pH above 7.0. During the manufacturing process, the active acid was removed (buffered) This makes for a more stable paper that will not discolor or break down over time. Please note that all Acid Free papers are not necessarily archival quality. Commercial papers can be made with or without acid. Papers and inks used for scrap booking and decorations within a scrapbook should be acid free for long term storage.

What is Archival Quality? When a paper is "Archival Quality" it has been made with the intention that it will last for a very long time without breaking down and/or discoloring. Generally this paper will not contain acid, chlorine, lignin and other additives that can cause paper to breakdown or deteriorate.

What is the P. A. T. TEST? Photographic Activity Test - detects the potential for damaging interaction between a photographic image and the material used for storage.

What is TAPPI? the trade association of the manufacturers in the paper industry TAPPI (Technical Association of Pulp and Paper Industry

What is unbuffered paper or tissue ? Paper which is unbuffered contains neither acid or alkali.

What is buffered paper or tissue? Paper to which calcium carbonate (alkali) has been added during the manufacturing process in order to neutralize acids which could develop over time due to aging or adverse conditions under which the item is stored.

What is "pH neutral"? This means the paper or substance used contains neither acid or alkali.
